The Icarus Touch

Howard Briggs naive and not long left school heads for war as a pilot during
the First World War. His mother has pulled a few strings to get him attached to
the same squadron as his old school friend and ex head boy Mike Curtis but is
it the same Mike that Howard used to know? Surely war couldn't have changed him
that much? And it's not long before a vicious rivalry develops between them.
With a tough Commanding Officer, tempered with the tenderness of Jannie, the
fiance of a recently killed fighter ace, Howard settles down to a life at war
and the many shocks he receives. When a new pilot is killed saving Howard's
life, the ex barn stormer and rodeo rider Mo' a highly extroverted American,
helps him through the feelings of guilt and depression and they soon become
close friends. Together they head into a variety of adventures, some humerous
and some life threatening, but all that help mature and balance Howard's
outlook on life and towards others.
But at that time and in those circumstances emotions ran high and as the
relationship between Jannie and Howard deepened into love, so Curtis began to
show more and more hatred towards Howard. Then Curtis is sent home and all
seems well but then he reappears again and what is more, he's going to take
over the Squadron...
This is a really fast paced novel with action from beginning to end and
displaying all forms of human emotions. Love, hate, fear, humour, cowardice
and total immaturity, they're all there.
Be warned though, once started this is a difficult novel to put down!
